Leaders of the Teacher and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) walked out of a meeting with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission furious, as another attempt to address their salary concerns broke down.

The National Labour Commission directed the striking members of TEWU to return to work as the Commission deals with their issues of placement on the Single Spine Salary Structure.

The NLC argued that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission is already in talks with their leaders over the matter and ordered they return to work with immediate effect.

But speaking to Citi News the National Chairman of TEWU Peter Lumor said they are not likely to return because they are not happy with the way their concerns are being handled.

“We are not happy with this placement issue. We have done this with VCG and Fair Wages. VCG was here but the human resource directors who did the work and submitted reports and must speak to it were not here. Our strike still continues. The leadership of TEWU will meet and discuss the way forward,” he said.

The Ministry of Education has given the Ghana Education Service the approval to advertise vacancies for teachers for all second-cycle institutions as well as basic schools across the country.

This was revealed by the President of Conference of the National Regional Directors of Education(CONRED) Alhaji Mohammed Haroon.

Head teachers across the country have been appealing to government to lift the embargo placed on public sector employment since according to them a shortage in teaching staff is hampering academic performance in schools.

But the National president of CONRED said  government has asked head teachers to declare vacancies ahead of recruitment.

“Right now all directors, all heads of senior high schools have been asked to declare vacancies in various subject areas and even in basic schools  so that we can see the vacancies that exist at all the levels and in the various schedules. We have also declared vacancies for cooks, watchmen and non-teaching staff.

He added that “we are collating the vacancies that are available by second week of February to the end of February for onward submission to the Ministry of Education so that the ministry can get clearance from the Ministry of Finance in order to give quota for the recruitment of teachers’ to go on and that is what we are all doing now.”

He said the recruitment will enhance teaching and learning across the country and also raise the standards of performance at both the second-cycle and the basic school levels.”

This move will contribute to a reduction of the teeming unemployed youth in the country.

GES blames donor partners for error-ridden textbooks

The Ghana Education Service says it cannot be blamed for the supply of error ridden text books to Junior High Schools across the country.

A Junior High School teacher, Phanuel Yaw Ayawli, petitioned the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) in December  2015 to withdraw the ‘error-ridden’ New Integrated Science Textbooks for Junior High Schools.

Speaking to Citi News, the Director for Basic Education at Ghana Education Service, Stephen Adu said the GES did not have the opportunity to read through the books before it was printed hence it cannot be held responsible for the development.

“… It was donor partners who sponsored the printing, they gave it to their own printers so we did not see the book until they came into the system.”

The error ridden textbooks were sponsored by UK AID and printed in India by SEDCO publications.

In an earlier interview with Citi News, the Deputy Minister in charge of pre-tertiary education, Alex Kyeremeh indicated that a directive had been issued for the withdrawal of the books but a number of Regional Directors of Educations, however, say they had yet not received such a directive.

Meanwhile, attempts to get Sedco publishing house (the publishers of the books) to respond to the issues have proved futile.

Youth Arena Network made ‘History’ at Learning Strategist Seminar for SHS Students in the Jasikan District

$

Youth Arena Network,a registered youth network with the National National Youth Authority over the weekend made history at its first ever Learning Strategist Seminar of the year at the Jasikan District of the Volta Rrgion.

The programme was brought together by The founder and CEO of Youth Arena Network, an education focused youth ,Aaron Lordstone Kpogo and the Buem District Education Office .

Others speakers at the programme include resourceful persons in the person of Divine Kpe and Bright Dey,.

They engaged senior high and technical school students within the Jasikan district for a three day program dubbed

“PURSUING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE: THE ACT OF APPLYING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS”.

Education is a vital tool for the holistic development of human capital that goes to positivelyaffect all other aspects of socio-economic development of individuals and the country as a whole. Education is so important that we cannot leave it to chance, especially on the art of the student being educated.

Students form the main object of instruction in our various educational institutions. As part of their obligation is their ability to study and pass examinations, in order to qualify to the next level in their academic progression. Unfortunately, we have witnessed various attempts by some students over successive years who tried to adopt foul means to pass exams without the basic principle of engaging and developing their mental capacity to read, think, learn and understand what they were taught. The accompanying effect has being the high exams failure rates in WAEC organised exams.

Records from WACE have shown that over the past years the pass mark rate of students whosat for WASSCE is below the average mark of 50%. Below is the data by the Deputy Minister for Education (Tertiary), Hon. Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa on August 27, 2014.“Here are the facts from WAEC (FACTS not my OPINION) on the percentage of students who obtained A1 to C6 in 6 subjects (3 Electives and 3 Core Subjects) which is the National Accreditation Board’s minimum entry requirements to progress to the tertiary level.2006 – 12.51% 2007 – 10.58% 2008 – 12.95% 2009 – 14.58% 2010 – No examinations due to four year change. 2011 – 26.00% 2012 – 31.19% 2013 – 19.15% 2014 – 28.10%” *(2015 – 25.00%)*** This is yet to confirmed though.

The above data using year 2012 as the bench mark, shows that averagely 68.81% and more of students fail in their final exams each year, over the past ten years. The factors accounting for these high percentages are multifaceted. Nonetheless, the CEO of Youth Arena Network has identified that, students’ inability to know how to learn and to comprehend what is being taught, largely account for these high failure rates. Teachers often than not tell students to learn but not how to learn. Not knowing the ‘HOW’ approach to learning makes most of them easily give up on learning their books.

Another factor identified, is the over concentration or premium given to few schools in theurban sectors in relation to access to reading materials, internet, physical infrastructures, motivational exposures to students, etc. at the disadvantage of majority of schools in the remote areas and regions in Ghana. Yet, all final year candidates across the country are mandated to write the same standardised WAEC exams each year.

This he believes is the reason we have consistently been revolving almost around the same percentages of pass marks over these years.

He has therefore taken deliberate steps to empower students on learning skills and to champion positive behavioural attitudes towards learning among students across the country.

The fact is, the traditional way learning is presented to students via instilling fear, canning, insulting, etc. is outmoded hence, the need to adopt new approaches that seek to imbibe in students, the act of marshalling their thinking processes to be able to learn and understand what is being taught.

The learning strategies seminar is one of the platforms he plans using to reach all SH/T schools in the country hence, for the first time extending his services from Accra closer to the students in the Jasikan district. The program was very impactful as the resource persons missed no words in challenging students to make the best use of their minds by disciplining themselves to stay focus on their books and sacrifice anything that will not help them to achieve their academic goals at the end of the day.

They were admonished to be solution oriented thinkers, instead of complain at the least opportunity. At the end of each session books related to the theme were donated to stock the libraries of these schools. This is meant to aid students’ internalise these principles as they engage in reading them overtime.

Below are some feedbacks from some of the heads of schools and students:

In an interview  with some of the participants of the programme, they have shown their excitement for bein part of the programme. Read their views below….

“Your coming is so timely, at a time management and staffs were deciding on how to motivate students to learn. I can conclusively say, this seminar is not just meant for students, but staffs also have something to learn from. Indeed, this seminar has been very beneficial to all”. -Rev. Edison Adekode. (Asst. Headmaster for Academics, Bueman SHS)

“This has been the most successful seminar in the area of learning strategies for students. We are so enlightened and we thank God for your coming”. –Mr. Divine. (Teacher, Bueman SHS)

“What you have just taught us, in fact, we really appreciate them. As students, we need more
of these messages to take immediate actions on them. In the class, teachers are teaching but
our minds are on other things, when instead that is what is needed to cope with lessons and
understand what is being taught. –Nelson Gormadu. (Student, Bueman SHS).
“The students are having learning difficulties, hence, what they have learnt here will
empower them to focus on their books”. –Snr. House Master, Okajakrom SHTS
“The program has benefited us a lot, because we now have knowledge on how to learn”.
-Grirl’s prefect, Father Dogli Memory SHTS
“The program has come at the right time where students are deficient in learning. The
program has expose students to a lot of things and enlightened them to change their attitudes
towards learning and this will translate into good academic performances.
-Snr. House Master, Father Dogli Memory SHTS.
Despite the rough terrain vis-à-vis the road network, climate and remote locations, the
positive responses from both students and teaching staff of the need for more of such
engagements was enough to keep the enthusiasm of the speakers alive.
Everyone; both individuals and corporate organisations are stakeholders in education, as such
the time has come for all to come on board to deliberately work in bringing about the needed
improvement in students performances, rather than looking at it from an individual household
perspective.
As a nation, we cannot desire to see improvement in candidates’ results, when we keep doing the same old things and using the same approaches. Many students who could not pass their final exams have giving up on hope; hence the time to act is now.
The CEO of Youth Arena Network is therefore inviting interested individuals and corporate organization to come on board to champion this noble campaign by sponsoring books to stock the libraries of schools in the remote areas of Ghana, while they in turn promise to actively engage their time, energy and intellectual abilities and properties across the entire country to help shape the learning skills and decision making abilities of our future
generation (students).
Aaron gave Special thanks  to Divine Kpe, the CEO of Teen Age Build-Ghana and Bright Dey, the CEO of Commuinties of Thinking and the Head of planning and Stats. Unit, Ho regional GES Head office for availing their time and knowledge in making this program a success.
Also, to Nelson Agordoh,  for making 40 copies of his book titled;
‘FIFTY SECRETS EVERY SHS STUDENT MUST KNOW’ in addition to mine at no cost
as donations to the libraries of these schools.
Media partners at the programme include, Lorlornyo fm, Cape360 and EducationGhana.net; Special  appreciation went to the media houses and  The SHS coordinator for Jasikan district, Mr. Joseph Adeti, to the
heads of schools, teaching staff and all students, for making this program a success.
His  last special thanks go to God Almighty for his direction, guidance, favour and protection
throughout the program.
Watch out for the next edition!

Could Nkrumah be wrong? The Cry of a Patriotic Ghanaian

$

Life in our part of the world is not only becoming “the survival of the fittest”, but a combination of various complexities. Once a child is born and he begins to gain some freedom, he no longer has to fight for only bread and butter but must fight the system as well.
If the fight was limited to the divisive tendencies that characterize our daily utterances alone, there would be no cause for alarm since we are noted to be “talk plenty, do little” kind of people.
But it is not so. Man, in our part of the world has to fight corruption and injustice in addition to those divisions. In our part of the world, one gets education to acquire skills, knowledge, morality, patriotism and also be able to discern. It is expected that the higher one climbs the academic ladder, the less tribalistic or less politically biased one becomes due to the analytical and discerning tool one is equipped with.
But it is not uncommon to see students of higher institutions get themselves entangled in this canker of discrimination be it on tribal grounds or in political colours.
As a result of that one may not be judge by the content of his character but by where he comes from whether north, south, east or west or whether one is with party A or B. Sometimes, you could hear people make comments like “this guy can do the work but because he is with that party, we won’t give him the chance” which in my opinion compounds the problem and gives me enough reason to believe that even our so call institutions churn out ignorant people. What makes things scary is when you live in a society where good could be seen as evil and evil as good depending on which part of the divide the doer is from.
The reality begins to dawn on you that our democracy or whatever we call it is too polarised hence the bleak picture we paint for ourselves A trip down our history will give you accounts of the divisive tactics or techniques the colonialist employed in oppressing our forefathers to the extent that a southerner sees a northerner as a potential competitor or enemy.
No wonder the Blackman traded his fellow Blackman just for a common buzz (drink) and a gun just to satisfy a Whiteman. We love the oppressors but loath our fellow Blackman to the core. This was the beginning of mistrust among the Blackman until liberation came knocking on our doors. We thought with the Blackman handling his own affairs, there will be truth and reconciliation.
We thought the independence of the Blackman would have given us some room to trust one another once again love one another once more since “the Blackman was capable of handling his own affairs” It was not so. The seed of discord has already been sown. It has germinated and has gain roots.it has now gained firmer roots.
It could no longer be uprooted. We tried cutting it. It still springs up and continues to bear seeds of discord among us. We see it grow but we are unable to stop it. It spreads its tentacles across the length and breadth of our society Our democracy has become a paradox.it has become so complex so that only outsiders see some good in it and keep praising us as being model to other Africans.
All we see as the insiders or owners of this system is corruption, hopelessness, poverty, ignorance and all the vices. It is seen in every facet of society including our schools and colleges. So tell me, of what good is of a democracy if its pride resides in the perception of foreigners?
My next door neighbour who is not too lettered do agues with me that Ghana would have been like Europe if her destiny had been left in the hands of the whites. Though I believe in freedom and sovereignty and always argue in that line, I am sometimes tempted to agree with him by asking these begging questions; Could Nkrumah be wrong? Is the Blackman capable of managing his own affairs?
Has any African proven Nkrumah right or wrong in Blackman land? Your guess is as good as mine. When the hurdles seem insurmountable and the odds are against us, when the solution is in sight but we chose to wind round and round it, when the sun rises and falls always but we only chose to exist in darkness, when in the abundance of water we go thirsty, then do not be surprise if I tell you that I always reside to bed with this my words fighting my thoughts; “I weep within anytime I look into the future. I sob for Ghana anytime I compare the past to present happenings My soul dies within me when I juxtapose the divide and rule tactics used by the British colonialist with what party politics is doing to us today I become hopeless when I realize that even the youth are divided along partisan lines in the name of democracy I bury my face in my palms when I realize even our youth groups and class pages are polarized Is the Blackman not capable of managing his own affairs?” Nkrumah could be wrong.

Unpaid Teachers Petition GNAT,NAGRAT,TEWU and CCT-GH over Salary Arrears

Unpaid  teachers in the country have finally called on the Teacher Unions to come to their aid in view of the collection of their salary arrears.

Most of the affected teachers are from the 2013 and 2014 batch of newly trained teachers from the Colleges of Education ,as well as teachers on promotions who were paid only three months of their salary arrears.

Leadership of the group made this revelation in a statement signd by its PRO ,Wisdom Nyahe.

Read the statement below…..

VOICE OF UNPAID TEACHERS A PLEA FOR YOUR CONCERN – TEACHER UNIONS
( GNAT, NAGRAT, CCT , TEWU etc. )

We are not writing this letter with even an atom of happiness in our hearts. We would have taught that it never comes to the point of writing this letter but we probably got it all wrong thinking you are there 24/7 keeping watch over our welfare.
We cannot ascertain the degree of importance you attached to our welfare and security issues or the actual benefits of being a member of a union with monthly contribution if you’re cannot fight for us to get what is legally and genuinely ours.

We know you are very smart and sharp when it comes to securing our signatures to be your members which you do even before we complete school or get our appointment letters. We taught that same smartness is what you will employ and apply when it comes to our welfare and security issues but NO !!!!!

Ever since we joined the teaching fraternity and become automatic members of one of you ( either by our own consent or by force ), we have encountered numerous problems ranging from poor conditions of work, unfavorable government policies, unnecessary government interruption, too long duration for upgrading after posting and now more suicidal non-payment of arrears policy for which we your members have starved and worked for.

These we counted on you to lead the front to fight for our better treatment but we have now begin to realise that you are only interested in our monthly dues for business purposes without placing first premium on the aims and objective of the union you communicated to us before we joined you.
Perhaps you are siding with government to infringe on our occupational rights and suppress our progress the likely benefits which might have blinded your eye over your duties as welfare protection unions.

Our primary reason for writing this letter is not to discredit any effort you might have done earlier in fight for these arrears or any general protection and welfare fight you might have fought for teachers as unions.
This write-up only aims to register our displeasure about how you are not showing enough concern to help us get our salary arrears.

We are hereby informing or reminding you that we your members ( 2013 and 2014 batches of teachers not forgetting the pending 2015 batch ) have worked for government for 12 good months without pay and in anticipation of payment with arrears: the costs we incurred in those 12 months, the loans we took to survive, the goods we credited, the travelling expenses to our stations in and out, the rents we owe, the inferior things we ate due to lack of money and heavy debt, the good people we disappointed, the phone calls we dodged, the good name we lost and the endless list of traumatic experiences we had to endure trusting that one day the much waited salary with arrears will come to wash down all the filth that accumulated on us as a result of the delayed payment to relieve us to pick calls our families and creditors and to restore our image only to be told that only 3 months of our salary arrears will be paid and the remaining 9 months be paid after we fill forms which did not make clear meaning to us.

We expected you ( teacher unions ) to ask questions on our behalf and assure us of our money from the response you might have gotten from government but we are yet to see any sign of date.

We even complied by filling the forms at the IPPD departments of the various Education Offices but over 2 years now for ( 2013 batch ) and over one year now for ( 2014 batch) nothing has since then been heard.

Now the wait is over and our patience has completely ran out. Our hope seems to be dashing away and our trust in you is getting betrayed.

Therefore we are starting the search for our genuine money not behind you but through you. Not without you but with you.

We hope that as we always promise to protect our welfare you use this test to deliver your promise. We also humbly ask for your advice, directions and steps we should take to claim our money with your full support if government fails also is reluctant to do what is just and fair by giving to Caesar what is Caesar’

We kindly want to see or hear something from you in relation to this call in terms of actions you take concerning this letter before or on 30th May, 2016.

If by the end of this time we have not heard anything positive or seen our monies in our accounts we will take it that you are no more there for us and we will use any means legally available to demand our money until the monies finally hit the accounts of the affected teachers to restore our lost image.
Counting on our usual cooperation.

Signed.
Nyahe Wisdom.

President Mahama, commended the Ghana Education Service for the quick action it took in suspending the Headmaster of Mfantsipim School for collecting unapproved levies from students.

The president made this comment at the 25th golden jubilee celebration of Akatsi Secondary Technical Senior High School in the volta Region.

He urged the GES to do a lot more investigations to ensure that no Head of School charge unapproved fees as it goes against government’s initiative to make Secondary education accessible.

President Mahama hopes to return to Akatsi to inaugurate the completed Community Day Senior High School at Avenorkpome.

Speaker of Parliament Edward Doe Adjaho and the Minister of Education Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang were present at the ceremony.

Vodafone empowers more females in engineering

Vodafone’s enterprising initiative, the “Female Engineering Students Sponsorship programme” (FESSP) enters its fifth year this month.

The scholarship programme, launched in 2011, has so far sponsored over 30 beneficiaries for further studies and nurtured them to work with the Telecom Company through internship, national service and subsequent full-time employee roles.

FESSP fundamentally empowers and embraces young female engineering students from various Universities in line with the company’s unfettered commitment to developing brilliant female graduates.

This week, the initiative has taken a step further by sponsoring four final-year female students from three Universities – University of Ghana, Science and Technology and the Ghana Technology University. The comprehensive scholarship package includes the payment of academic user fees, provision of electronic devices, free airtime, money for books as well as a unique opportunity for the ladies to participate in Vodafone’s flagship programmes.

Commenting during the brief presentation ceremony at the company’s Headquarters, Haris Broumidis, Chief Executive of Vodafone Ghana said:

“We see this as directly in line with our commitment to nurture brilliant female students and furnish them with work experience to prepare them for the job market. I will urge the beneficiaries to show eagerness in grabbing every opportunity that comes their way in order to be successful. As a company, we will continue to act as the catalyst in making their dreams come true.”

On her part, the Human Resources Director of Vodafone Ghana, Stella Agyenim-Boateng said:

“We believe in equal opportunities for every person no matter the race, background or colour.  Over the years, we have observed the lack of female balance within our Technology unit. There was therefore the need to devise ways of encouraging more female participation in technology and we see this avenue as a sure way of bridging that gap. Our aim is to develop a long term relationship with the students and make effective future leaders out of them.”

Survey by KNUST Students revealed Millipedes in Palm Oil sold on the market

A survey conducted by some postgraduate students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in four major markets, has revealed that some traders soak millipedes in palm oil to change its colour and taste.

The shocking revelation comes nearly two months after the Food and Drugs Authorty (FDA), said it was safe to consume palm oil, following the arrest of some producers who were mixing the product with Sudan IV,  a cancer-causing agent.

Sudan IV is an industrial dye used in the colouration of plastics and other synthetic products.

The FDA, after series of interventions, declared palm oil safe for consumption in December last year, and advised consumers to only patronize palm oil from sellers with accredited badges from the Authority. But the latest revelation from the survey by students of KNUST, should put patrons of palm oil products back on high alert

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) says it has been notified of the results of the survey and has vowed to clamp down on food vendors who continue to adulterate food items on the market.

The Deputy Chief Executive of the FDA, John Odame Darkwa, assured that his outfit will monitor the vendors and stated that they will focus on the supply end of the palm oil trade.

According to him, “The essential thing is to make sure you tackle the supply end and the supply end are the producers.”

Mr. Darkwa further said the FDA will be collaborating with the market queens to flush out the individuals adulterating palm oil for sale.

“The market queens have also vowed to ensure that the people in their circles are also going to be held responsible” he stated.

The Public Health Act 851 of 2012, section 12, prohibits the adulteration of food items and Mr. Darkwa indicated that individuals caught will face prosecution,

“If you are found out, then the law must take its full course against you,” he warned.

Are millipedes poisonous?

Millipedes are not known to be poisonous, but many species have glands capable of producing irritating fluids that may cause allergic reactions to some individuals.

The defensive sprays of some millipedes also contain hydrochloric acid that can chemically burn the skin and cause long-term skin discoloration.

The only reported usage of millipedes as food comes from the Bobo people of Burkina Faso, who consume boiled and dried millipedes in tomato sauce.
