President Akuffo Addo is implementing Scholarship not Free SHS – Mr. Akowa

One of the communication team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Banda District of Brong Ahafo Region, Mr. Charles Akowua, has stated emphatically that Nana Akuffo Addo and his government should come and explain it vividly to Ghanaians that, the implementation of the free SHS is not free, but rather a scholarship.

According to the Communication team member, if the president is making the SHS free, why should it be some of the students or the year one students of the Senior High Schools?

He made this statements on Tain FM with Akua Mununkum and concluded that, in his view, it is not “free”, but rather, a scholarship to the first year students of SHS in 2017.

The Free SHS policy which took off this month with only first year students is benefiting at least over 400,000.

As a result of the policy, the number of students entering has put pressure on facilities in most of the schools, with some having challenges in accommodating the huge numbers.

It appears this situation has forced some head teachers to improvise by seeking to charge some fees although everything is supposed to be free.

The policy is projected to cost the country $100 million, an equivalent of ¢400 million for the first term of the first year.
