Maintain Allowances and Postings under New Teacher Education Reform Policy – Teacher Trainees

Teacher Trainees in the Public Colleges of Education are calling on government to as a matter of urgency, consider the usefulness of their allowances and maintain it as part of the New Teacher Education Reform Policy.

The Teacher Trainees are also urging government to maintain the automatic postings being carried out by the Ghana Education Service.

The teacher trainees included this and other relevant issues in a communique issued by the leadership of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) during its 23rd Annual General Assembly held at the Gbewaa College of Education at Pusiga in the Upper East Region.

The Trainees also commended Government’s initiative to convert the Colleges of Education into University Colleges of Public Universities offering Teacher Education Curricula, and subsequent amendment of the Colleges of Education Act 2012 (Act 847).

This policy which intends to replace the 3- year Diploma in Basic Education with a 4- year Bachelor of Education Degree Programme in the forty-six (46) Public Colleges of Education in Ghana for the 2018/2019 academic yea

The Association indicated that though it supports the New Teacher Education Reform Policy, it also beseech the government to;

a. come out with a comprehensive document to roll out the policy with regard to the Teacher Trainees’ Allowances, postings of newly trained teachers, the mode of examination, course specialization, study leave and the fate of the continuing students in the Colleges of Education under this policy.

b. table the proposal for further discussion before the policy is fully implemented.

c. come out with a time frame of this policy through the Parliament of Ghana.

d. employ all relevant bodies to review the Colleges of Education Act to meet the current developmental objectives of Ghana.
