The 2016 New School Year Teachers’ Conference ( NESTEC ) started on a good note as teachers from various schools in the country came to the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Hall in Accra.
The Segment was led by Mr Richard Laryea ,an International Educationist.
The Teachers discussed the Essence of the use of School Based Assessments (SBA) in Schools with most of them giving diverse views on the subject matter.
The SBA is mostly meant for assessing the performance of Pupils/Students in the classrooms. It details the pupils’ activities in Schools both in the classroom and at home.
The SBA records four aspects of the pupils’ activities.
- Individual Tests
- Group Works
- Individual Tests
Project Works
- The Individual Tests are mostly conduct by teachers either at the end of specific topics taught in school or specific duration.
The Group works are mostly conducted to check the skills of the pupils on practical aspects of the teaching and learning processes by putting them in groups either based on their learning abilities or by the teacher’s discretion ,to help the pupils bring out their various understandings of a phenomenon.
The Project Works are mostly given to pupils to be sent home to practice by themselves and produce the end product to school .The pupils will be given duration to finish the work which should be related to the classroom activities.
- The issue with the SBA is that it does not record the exercises of the pupils though the Circuit Supervisors are most interested in checking exercises than the SBA in most of the Schools.
The Ghana Education Service should also engage teachers on issues on the use of the School Based Assessments.
