The Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) has justified the decision to squander 100, 000 Ghana Cedis on hampers in 2012, arguing at that time, there was no Presidential directive against spending on hampers.

Executive Director of the PURC, Samuel Sarpong on Tuesday told Parliament that even though the Commission squandered hundred thousand cedis on hampers, they did not breach any regulation.

In defending the spending, Mr. Sarpong, argued that the directive to freeze hampers was imposed in 2013 by President Mahama, one year after the commissions hampers were given out.

His comment was to justify the commission’s expenditure of nearly 100,000 Ghana cedis on hampers in 2012.

Responding to questions at the ongoing public accounts committee sitting the Utilities commission boss insisted the purchases were to compensate their large clientele base.

The late President Mills in 2009 instructed ministries departments and agencies against the practice a directive which was extended in 2013 by President Mahama.

Nonetheless, Chairman of the public accounts committee Kwaku Agyeman-Manu said since the actual date of the directive was not available the committee should put its response in the report to the plenary.
