The University of Mines and Technology,(UMAT), Tarkwa has developed an equipment capable of recovering almost hundred percent gold without health and environment implications.
Known as the “Direct Smelting Method”, it was manufactured by the University with assistance from British Geological Survey in 2008 for small scale mining.
The technology has not been fully utilised due to lack of funding.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Jerry Kuma, who announced this at the validation of the Multilateral Mining Integrated Project, (MMIP) at Tarkwa said the equipment has been tried and tested and can address the health and environmental impact of mercury.
