New Teacher Licensing Policy: Criteria for Appraisal and Promotion of a Beginning Teacher

The New Teacher Licensing Policy known as the Pre-Tertiary Professional Teacher Development and Management Policy (PTPDM) has outlined the various guidelines for the Appraisal and Promotion of Teachers under the New Policy.

The Appraisal and Promotion will be based on the following Criteria:

1.  Competencies of the Teacher

2. Evidence of Professional Competence of the Teacher

PHASES FOR PROMOTION /APPRAISAL OF A BEGINNING TEACHER (BT)

There are four Stages a Teacher on this Rank will go through to be licensed.

The Stages Include;

1. Performance Planning Phase- First Two Weeks of January.

2. Progressive Review in July

3. Review and Appraisal at the end of the year.

4. Decision Making.This include; Rewarding, Training and Promotion

COMPETENCY AREAS ASSESSED FOR PROMOTION OF BEGINNING TEACHER

1. Organization and Management Skills

2. Innovative and Strategic Thinking

3. Leadership and Decision Making

4. Development and Improving

5. Oral and Communication Abilities

6. Job Knowledge and Technical Skills

7. Supporting and Co-operating

8. Maximizing and Maintaining Productivity

9. Development and Managing Budget and Saving Cost
INDUCTION TRAINING FOR BEGINNING TEACHERS

A) Complete Mandatory Training Course on ;

1. Basic Management Functions. E.g Teaching Methods,Class Control etc.

2.Teaching and Learning Materials and Lesson Note Preparation

3. Identifying Learning Needs of Pupils or Students

4. Demonstrating Commitment to Teaching

5. Develop Positive Attitudes and Moral Value.

B) Participating in  a Year Program in Orientation by Heads,Heads of Department ,Circuit Supervisor,District /Cluster in Service training.

NB:The same Criteria is applied to all other Ranks.
