TV3 was Bias in its Reportage on the death threat from GNAT Gen. Secretary – Daniel Baffoe

The Secretary of the Victims of 3 Months Salary Arrears Daniel Owusu Baffoe has criticized TV3’s reportage of his allegations against the General Secretary of GNAT, Mr David Ofori Acheampong.

He further described TV3 as being  bias in its news delivery on the issue of threat accusations, claiming he  should have been the first person to be interviewed if TV3 wanted to be fair.

He made these allegations in a statement copied to EducationGhana where he also elaborated on the his side of the story.

Read Statement Below…….

MY NEWS ON THREATS ACCUSATIONS AGAINST MR. DAVID OFORI ACHEAMPONG (GNAT GEN SEC) WAS MISCOMMUNICATED BY TV3

I trust that If there is any such law which will warrant the arrest of someone whose life has been threatened, it wouldn’t be on this planet of ours.

First of all, my accusations of GNAT GEN SEC threatening my life was explained in an attached audio. I owe not accountability for misinterpretation by the media or whoever informed Mr Acheampong.

It all started when Mr. Acheampong on my second group visit to GNAT headquarters, demanding answers to why teachers see them as not up to task with respect to the non-payment of teachers salary arrears.

I was reprimanded for being the secretary of V3MAPP, to have been issuing statements to condemn the teacher unions especially GNAT for unsatisfactory performance. From there, several campaigns to discredit me and V3MAPP’s stance was championed by GNAT reps across the country, with that of the likes of Nasiru Adamu Kasim and Mr Emmanuel Kwaboni going viral on social media.

I thought it was all over after our team left the premises of GNAT headquarters fully filled with joy, hoping that our arrears would be paid soon after.

Not until after our latest press release dated 29/07/2016 criticizing GNAT GEN SEC’s recommendations of three terms in basic school level being changed to two semesters did i realize that, it was yet not over.

To my utmost dismay, i was reported to the police for adding him to a whatsapp group which has all the top leaders of the three teacher unions on board. What then was the essence of Mr. Acheampong giving us his number if he didn’t want us to contact him? Even before our first ever meeting at GNAT headquarters, the PRO of GNAT called me on phone inviting me for a one-on-one meeting with the GNAT GEN SEC, of which i declined and rather went there with 5 reps of V3MAPP for the purpose of transparency and accountability.

Few minutes after Mr. Acheampong threatened to report me to the police, an unknown number called me claiming to be calling from the office of a police station, in its jurisdiction GNAT headquarters is situated. The unknown man invited me to come to that police station in Accra at a time i didn’t have a kobo on me whilst i was also at the outskirt of Kumasi.

Before God and man, i didn’t trust the authenticity of the number which called due to security reasons. So i sincerely told him i don’t have money to cater for the cost of T&T so i won’t be able to make it.

Two days after, another unknown number called threatening me to stop mentioning the name of GNAT GEN SEC, Mr David Ofori ACheampong if i value my life. What then is my offense if i let the public know that i believe the GEN SEC of GNAT has a hand in it?

I know the police are our friends and would not do anything to favour the rich against the poor.

TV3 was bias in its news delivery on the issue of threat accusations. I should have been the first person to be interviewed if TV3 wanted to be fair.

On this note, i want everyone to discredit the distortions in my story telecasted on TV3 news on 5/07/2016, which are part of the threats and intimidations aimed at stoping V3MAPP for keeping the teacher unions on their toes .

I would be patiently waiting for the police if indeed its true there have been some charges levelled against me. But Mr Ofori Acheampong should think about this akan proverb, “wodi kan wכ ahenfie a na wonni bem”; to wit, being first at the courts does not guarantee a case won.

Owusu Baffoe Daniel Secretary V3MAPP.

Eight top Chinese universities led by the Wenzhou University have agreed to collaborate with the Ghana Embassy in Beijing and Study in China Admission systems (SICAS) to offer 1,000 slots for Ghanaian students annually.

They have also agreed to offer 200 out of the 1,000 Ghanaian students with full scholarships to undertake various undergraduate and post graduate programmes.

This is according to the Deputy Ambassador to China, Horace Nii Ayi Ankrah.

He said the agreement was the outcome of his working visits to Wenzhou University and the head office of SICAS in Qingdao in China.

Ambassador Ankrah said the scholarships would focus on Pharmacy, Civil Engineering and Medicine in line with the Embassy’s new education policy to approach top Chinese universities to extend their ‘internationalization drive’ to Ghanaian students.

He said the embassy’s approach was an attempt to align its efforts with ‘access to education for all’ policy President John Dramani Mahama’s government launched a couple of years ago.

“However, to ensure effective and seamless alignment to this great policy of the current administration of Ghana, I have urged top Chinese universities to establish campuses in various regions of Ghana to help more Ghanaians gain access to higher education,” Mr Ankrah said.

Professor Li Xiaokun, President of the Wenzhou University, promised the Deputy Ambassador that his institution was committed to the new initiative.

Ms Zhang Lu, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SICAS, expressed satisfaction at the level of involvement of Ghana’s Embassy in Beijing and gave the assurance that the move would be successful.

Graphic reporter offered Doctorate degree for $ 4000

$

Two Ghanaian professors from the Valdosta State University in USA recently undertook investigations into how some prominent Ghanaians earn Honorary Doctorate degrees and concluded that many of the private universities dishing out the degrees were unaccredited.

The report, initially published by Pulse.com.gh drew conclusions on extensive investigations and gave an alarming list of tertiary institutions and names of prominent Ghanaians who got their degrees from some of these “unaccredited schools.”

Following from that there have been debates on how those degrees are earned and especially on social media, many have been mocking some of the personalities for going ahead to receive the honorary degrees from unaccredited universities.

$4000 for doctorate

Ms Mabel Aku Baneseh of Daily Graphic and the Ghana Journalist Association 2014 Journalist of the Year recently received a letter from the London Graduate School (www.LondonGS.co.uk) inviting her to attend a two-day top executive seminar and to receive an Honorary Doctorate Degree, to be conferred on her by the Commonwealth University (www.cub-edu.com).

In return, the letter requested her to pay a fee of $4,000 (Ghc15,600) to cover tuition, course materials, a Master Class Certificate, lunch and snacks during the sessions at the MJ Grand Hotel in East Legon, Accra just for the two-day event.

The letter indicated that the seminar was being organised to enable leaders and professionals of the calibre of Ms Baneseh to meet and exchange ideas and perspectives to make leaders better in what they do.

When Graphic Online contacted the London Graduate School to inquire if Ms Baneseh could still go ahead and receive the honours should she fail to pay the fees for the two-day seminar, the school responded in the negative.

Rather, it explained that the seminar and the honorary degree go together as a package which cannot be separated.

Responding to the nomination, Ms Aku Baneseh told Graphic Online that she was not ready to part with $4,000 just to earn an Honorary Doctorate.

According to her, she was aware people go through rigorous academic work to earn a Doctorate and was not ready to receive one on a “silver platter”.

The London Graduate School proudly defends the action in the following manner: In the past 10 years, the London Graduate School has partnered with the Commonwealth University and the Commonwealth Academy of Leadership and Management to add value to directors, managers, entrepreneurs and professionals in their important task of leading and managing.”

“We are proud to announce that one of the private universities in West Africa – Ecole Superieure Universitaire Cotonou has joined forces with the alliance. This will definitely make this consortium stronger and more effective to serve you,” the letter to Ms Baneseh indicated.

It added, “As part of the activities lined up to celebrate and challenge leaders like you [Baneseh], the Commonwealth University has selected few leaders to receive the Honorary Doctorate Degree. You are among the persons selected in recognition of your achievements and contributions.”

Checks on the websites of the two schools, London Graduate School and the said Commonwealth University indicated that they had the same addresses at 9 Offord Close, London, N 17 OTE.

The Dean of Students of the Pentecost University College (PUC), Apostle Dr Daniel Okyere Walker, has been elevated and inducted into office to take over from Apostle Dr Peter Ohene Kyei as the rector of the school.

The new rector becomes the university’s third since its establishment in March, 2003.

The outgoing rector’s tenure of office came to an end in July 2016 and he is set to head the Church of Pentecost in the Winneba area in the Central Region.

The Chancellor of the PUC, Apostle Dr Opoku Onyinah, assisted Apostle Dr Walker to put on his robe of office at a colourful investiture and induction ceremony in Accra last Sunday.

Presidential charter

In an address, Apostle Dr Walker expressed appreciation for the honour done him and pledged that his administration would work tirelessly to ensure that the PUC gain its Presidential Charter soon.

While extolling the good works of his predecessor, he said he would build on his predecessor’s legacies and make the university more attractive to the public as a centre of academic excellence.

As part of his vision to develop the PUC, the new rector stated that plans had been put in place to make the school a research-based institution of choice in the country and the West African sub-region.

In addition, he said the university would focus more on science and technology, stressing, “As we seek to become a renowned university in science and technology, we will invest in the sector as a means to support teaching, learning, research and administration”.

Apostle Dr Walker said the university ought to look for new avenues of generating income and that he was hopeful his administration would resolve that challenge.

“We will develop new funding streams to maintain financial strength and stability and we will do this by embarking on result-oriented fund- raising programmes,” he promised.

Core values

Apostle Dr Walker added that the PUC would not lose focus of its core values and would ensure that the courses run by the university were geared towards equipping its graduates with skills and knowledge required for the job market.

He said there was the need to forge strong collaboration between the school and its stakeholders in order to build a much stronger brand name, and was also quick to add that the university would not rest on its oars and would continuously strive to achieve more.

Apostle Dr Ohene Kyei charged his successor to build on the foundations of his predecessors and make the university great.

He assured Apostle Dr Walker of his utmost support.

Scholarship Scheme for Brilliant but Needy Girls

$

Over 4,000 brilliant, needy girls from some rural communities in the country have since 2012 benefited from a scholarship scheme to pursue education in senior high schools in the country.

Quality education

The scholarship scheme is aimed at providing quality education and comprehensive support for academically gifted young women from rural communities in parts of the Central, Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions, who are in need, to go through secondary and tertiary education.

The Director of Finance and Operations at CAMFED Ghana, Mr John Asibi Ali, said the organisation had a 10-year partnership with the MasterCard Foundation Scholarship programme.

He explained that the partnership was underpinned by the shared values and commitment to the provision of quality education and comprehensive support to academically gifted young women in rural communities within CAMFED’s operational regions.

Mr Ali was speaking at the opening of a one-week CAMFED Ghana Leadership and Enrichment camp 2016 in Kumasi.

The event, which had the theme: “Time to learn, dream and lead,” brought together over 1,780 female senior high school students who are beneficiaries of the MasterCard Foundation Scholarship package.

Activities planned for the week include, discussions on community give-back, goal-setting, role modeling sessions and hands-on personal and community leadership activities.

Potential

Mr Ali said the scholarship programme was designed to unlock the potential of a critical mass of academically brilliant yet disadvantaged girls and young women from rural Ghana.

He mentioned that the intention of the programme was to build a network of visionary educators in second cycle schools and universities who shared the objective of inclusive, equitable and highly quality education.

The Queenmother of Bomso in the Kumasi Metropolis, Nana Afia Abrafi II, commended CAMFED Ghana for its role in supporting the young women to help tackle poverty in rural communities, as well as enhance their education for a better tomorrow.

She called on gender advocates in the county to also look at the rate at which young girls were forced into early marriage and help find solutions to the problem.

She observed that less educated and poor girls living in rural areas were more prone to early marriages, and called on CAMFED Ghana and other institutions to come together to help nip the act in the bud.

This, according to her, would ensure that more girls in the country would be in the best position to pursue further education or learn a trade to become economically empowered to live an independent life.

Poverty reduction

Nana Abrafi said until issues affecting girl-child education were taken seriously, the nation’s bid to reduce poverty would be a mirage, and appealed to gender advocates in the country to do more to improve the well-being of girls.

The Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Mrs Mary Owusu Achiaw, said equipping the future generation of the country with the right leadership skills was very crucial for the growth of the individual, family, community and the nation as a whole.

This, she said, was particularly true as the lack of quality leadership in Africa had often been cited as a major factor militating against the development of the continent.

She said the establishment of the Girls’ Education Unit within the structures of the Ghana Education Service was among the effort by the government to boost girls’ education in the country.

Two Ghanaian researchers have called for the immediate dissolution of the National Accreditation Board.

According to them, the Board has failed woefully in its duties in terms of monitoring and supervising institutions awarding degrees and other certificates in Ghana.

This follows a research they conducted which revealed that a number of high profile Ghanaians including politicians, university lecturers, traditional rulers and top police officers have received fake academic and honorary degrees from these unaccredited institutions.

However, the National Accreditation Board has dismissed calls for its dissolution.

The Executive Secretary of the Board, Kwame Dattey, said there is no basis for such a call.

He told Radio Ghana that it is not true that there are unaccredited institutions which are awarding degrees in the country.

Mr. Dattey, said the institutions listed by the two Ghanaian scholars as having awarded fake degrees to Ghanaians are not based in the country and the Board has no jurisdiction over such foreign institutions.

WASSCE 2016: WAEC Blocks the Results of 51,495 WASSCE Candidates for Owing Fees

The results of 51,495 candidates who wrote the 2016 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have been blocked on the website of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

This is because the candidates owe school fees and have, therefore, been directed to go to their former senior high schools (SHSs) to settle their indebtedness and collect their result slips.

Reacting to complaints that the results of some WASSCE candidates had been blocked by WAEC, the Deputy Director of Public Affairs of the council, Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, said it was the Ghana Education Service (GES) that instructed the council not to upload candidates who owed school fees.

She explained that candidates whose results were genuinely not online owed their schools and could only see their results after paying their school fees.

Mrs Teye-Cudjoe said that had been the practice since 2014 as it was the only way such candidates could be compelled to settle their bills.

“Anytime the student pays the school fees, he or she is expected to go to the GES for a letter which instructs us to upload that candidate’s results and we promptly do so,” she explained.

Mrs Teye-Cudjoe explained that the number of candidates whose results were not uploaded as of the time the results were released was far more than the number currently, and added that WAEC updated the list anytime a candidate was cleared by the GES.

She said the position of the GES to block the uploading of the results of such candidates was in the right direction as that was the only way the schools could retrieve their fees.

Asked how a candidate could determine whether his or her results were not uploaded because of non-payment of school fees, Mrs Teye-Cudjoe explained that if an affected student tried to access his or her results, a message would indicate that the said candidate should see his or her headmaster or headmistress.

“If a candidate’s results are withheld because of alleged examination malpractice, when that student tries accessing the results, he or she will be notified that the results are being investigated,” she explained.

Referring to the withheld results that were being investigated, Mrs Teye-Cudjoe said she was hopeful that by next week, a meeting would be held and the final outcome of the investigations would be made known.

She said WAEC was working to ensure that the genuine candidates whose results were among those withheld were not unduly disadvantaged.

On August 12, 2016, WAEC released the results of WASSCE which indicated that the entire results of 598 candidates had been cancelled, while the results of candidates from 85 schools had been withheld for alleged cases of mass cheating.

A?statement issued by WAEC explained that the withheld results would be cancelled if the candidates were found culpable or released if otherwise, while 13 others whose results were cancelled had been barred from taking any of the council’s examinations for two years, mainly for impersonation during the examination.

The statement further said 1,576 candidates had their subject results cancelled.

It said with the aid of the Item Differentia Profile (IDP) software, 2,293 candidates, who were identified to have cheated in the English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science papers, had had their relevant subject results cancelled.
