A postgraduate student at the department of mechanical engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and technology, Adofo Yaw Kwakye has developed a prosthetic foot to aid the movement of amputees across the world. The product was made from local materials in Ghana. Adofo is the first Ghanaian to develop a prosthetic foot from sawdust and some other indigenous materials.

Making a presentation at the 2nd International Conference on Engineering, Science, Technology and Entrepreneurship held on 16th to 18th August, 2017 at KNUST, IDL Conference Centre at the sindicate room, he noted that, in developing countries such as Ghana, people who are limb deficient are mostly low class income earners according to research. He added that research has also proven that it is very expensive, hence the usual low income earners cannot afford and therefore it has become necessary for engineers to come to their aid.

“There is the need for engineers to produce prosthesis of adequate quality but less cost from local materials so that we can help amputees gain their psychological sense of wholeness. This will also aid their day to day activities for them to fend for themselves and help reduce the over dependency on government and random people for support. A prosthetic foot was made from local materials specifically wood fibre also known as sawdaust and silicone sealant.  The foot has been tested on an appropriate below knee amputee and the feedback was very positive,” he stated.

Adofo Yaw Kwakye in collaboration with F.W Adam (mechanical engineering  department, KNUST) and Dr. Kwadwo Mensah Darkwa (Materials engineering) undertook this research.

Answering questions at the serminar after his presentation, Adofo indicated that a major challenge he has been facing is inadequate funding to enable them produce more products. He therefore called on the ministry of health, other government agencies and the general public to support them expand the project.

He believes the research will put Ghana on the global stage if it is sponsored. The research is titled “Development and analysis of a prosthetic foot made from local materials”.

Education Directors advocate for a Reduction in Number of Subjects in Basic Schools

$

The Conference of Directors of Education
(CODE) has advocated the reduction of the
number of subjects studied at the various
levels of basic education.

It suggested that while pupils in the
kindergarten and lower primary should study
only numeracy, literature and physical
education, those in upper primary and
students in junior high school (JHS) should be made to study six subjects, instead of nine.

In a communique issued at the end of the 24th annual conference of CODE at Abesim, near Sunyani, last Saturday, the conference expressed the view that the use of chalk had outlived its usefulness in schools and,
therefore, suggested that blackboards should be replaced with whiteboards and markers provided for use by teachers.

The communique, signed by the National President and the National Secretary of CODE, Mrs Margaret Frempong-Kore, and Mr Isaac Nsiah Edwards, respectively, did not assign any reasons for the proposal to the educational authorities to reduce the
number of subjects being studied at the basic level.

However, in an interview, Mrs Frempong-Kore explained that at the Kindergarten and lower primary levels, the major problem now was literacy and numeracy.

“By the time that the child leaves the lower primary, if he cannot read, he cannot grasp other subjects taught at Upper Primary and the JHS levels,” she said.

She further explained that the conference also wanted the subjects taught at the upper primary and the JHS.levels to be reduced from nine to six because there was a challenge about reading currently.

Justifying the contention of CODE for the subject to be reduced, Mrs Frempong-Kore said the subjects had to be reduced to enable the pupils to concentrate on the
basics of the subjects they would pursue at the senior high school (SHS) level.

“With the low level of reading, studying nine subjects gets the students rather confused,” she added.
.
Free SHS policy
The CODE, in its communique issued at the end of its meeting, said as much as CODE supported the free SHS policy, “we recommend an increase in advocacy
through the distribution of hard copies of guidelines on the policy”.
It also called for the timely payment of all subsidies inrelation to the programme to prevent delayed payments during its implementation, a feature that was
associated with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP),
the progressively free SHS and the Capitation Grant. It also expressed concern over the lack of textbooks and, in some cases, inadequacies in the provision of
teaching and play materials and called for an immediate solution to the problem.
.
Pre-school education
“There is a big deficit in the supply of furniture at the basic level,” the communique stated, and suggested that the award of contract for the production and distribution of furniture should be done at the district
level to ensure quality, appropriateness and timely delivery.
“We are suggesting that the construction of new primary schools should have kindergartens attached, while the training of early childhood education teachers should be encouraged by increasing the quota for study leave,” it said.
.
TVET courses
The communique recommended that facilities at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions should be redesigned and improved
to attract females and persons with disability.
“Effective inputs such as government of Ghana grants, vehicles, residential and office accommodation, as well as office equipment, should be made available to the
education directorates for effective delivery of directors’ mandate,” it said.
It said CODE supported the licensing of teachers by the National Teaching Council to improve on teachers’ professional competence, but recommended that there
should be more education on the issue.

Self – Styled NUGS President Luqman & his Cohorts Convicted

Self-styled president of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Luqman Abubakari, and three others have been ordered by the Accra Circuit Court to sign a bond to be of good behaviour for two years or serve two years in prison in default.

The four were arrested in October last year for engaging in hot exchanges at the premises of TV3 in Accra leading to firing of gunshots. Abubakari, Abdul Kudus Adams, Isaac Kwame and Eric Sofo were then arraigned on conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful entry, assault and rioting but they pleaded not guilty to the charge. However, the court on Tuesday found them guilty and accordingly convicted them but were spared custodial sentence following a plea by their counsel, Gary Nimako Marfo to the effect that they were first offenders. Before sentencing them, Mr Nimako Marfo pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, stating the four had no crime record, and that they have regretted for the various roles they played in the chaotic scene at the TV3 premises last year. He further told the judge the convicts were breadwinners of their families with unemployed wives and that any custodial sentence would impact negatively on the entire family. The court taking into account the plea of Mr Nimako Marfo, sentenced them to sign a bond to be of good behavior for two years or in default, serve two years in prison. Meanwhile, lead counsel for the convicts, Raph Agyapong, has served notice they would appeal the judgement of the Circuit Court. He said he is not satisfied with the decision of the court to bond his clients to be of good behavior, indicating that the prosecution did a terrible work in telling the court exactly what happened. He argued that one of the witnesses in the case was inconsistent with his submission. Background The court had heard that on October 11, 2016 about 21:45 hours the police had information that riots had broken out on the premises of TV3. According to the prosecution, on the same day police investigations revealed that a producer of TV3 known as Kombla Klutse invited Julian Mawuse Cobbina a student of GIMPA Law School to the premises for an interview following his election as National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) during its news at 22:00 hours. Abubakari and the three convicts, who were in black Toyota vehicle, also went to the premises of the TV3 under the pretext that he was the NUGS President. Abubakari also said he was to tell the producer that he had documents purporting that he was the NUGS President, the prosecution said. Mr Cobbina and his executives arrived at the premise and there were exchanged of words between Abubakar and Mr Cobbina. In the process, Mr Cobbina and his team were allegedly assaulted and were chased away. Personnel of TV3 could not handle the issue and sought assistance from the Police who intervened and arrested the accused persons.

Prof. Boohene explained that prior to the conference, each university was expected to select some students or staff with laudable business plans for competition out of which the best three would be awarded with a cash prize.

Responding, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, said he was excited that UCC was making strides in many areas. He commended the lecturers for coaching the students to win such important awards adding “you have done well for making the projects of the students into reality and I believe it will help them to become entrepreneurs after school.” He advised the students not to relent but work hard to project the image of the University positively.

At the same ceremony, the Dean of the School of Physical Sciences, Prof. David Kofi Essumang also informed the Vice-Chancellor that Dr. Martin Anokye of Department of Mathematics and Statistics, has been adjudged the Best Research Presenter at the International Conference on Applied Physics and Mathematics (ICAPM) held in Frankfurt, Germany.

The Vice-Chancellor congratulated Dr. Anokye on his effort and said it was the collective responsibility of all members of the University Community to lift high the name of UCC. “If we win, we win together and if we sink, we sink together” Prof. Ampiah stressed. He urged the various Colleges, Faculties and Departments to earmark funds for conferences and workshops and therefore praised the Department of Mathematics and Statistics for supporting Dr. Anokye to the conference.

The Vice-Chancellor called on departments in the School of Business to team up with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics to develop models in areas of common interest noting that this could be a good starting point for the two departments.
Present at the meeting were the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George K. T. Oduro and Registrar, Mr. John Kofi Nyan.

The President has asked religious bodies to shift focus from establishing tertiary institutions to early childhood development, to instill the needed values in young ones before they grow up.

Delivering a keynote address at the 8th Biennial General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Accra on Thursday, August 24, Nana Akufo-Addo said there is a need for the Church to reach back to training children to become good men and women for the country.

He observed the shift of the Church’s attention from the development of basic education to putting up Universities is gradually impacting negatively on the moral fabric of society. The critical foundation and time in early childhood development where discipline and patriotism must be inculcated are being missed.

Nana Akufo-Addo recalled his early days when it was an issue of pride to be a product of a mission school. “But those values are no more existing, the church must have to go back and train good men and women for the growth of the church and the country” he said.

The President noted the impact of a church cannot be measured by its congregation but how high the members adhere to the teaching of the faith and society. He therefore challenged Christians to carry along with them to work and every facet of their lives, the discipline and responsibility as required of them by the Lord.

He also called on the church to pray for his government to be able to deliver on the promises made to the people of Ghana.

The 2016 aspirant for the position of the General Secretary of the Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana, Mr.Bernard Kofu Ansah has been expelled indefinitely from engaging in Students Politics in the domain of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana.

This verdict was signed by the Acting Chairman of the Judicial Committee of the Association.

According to verdict,Mr Bernard Kofi Ansah is still yet to respond to the committee’s calls, letters and messages as at issuing this ruling.

Bernard was earlier invited by the committee to answer certain questions which he declined the invitation.

The Judicial Committee established that
all the findings as established in the earlier ruling proved to be true and still stands.

According to the JC ,the  broadly refusal of Mr Bernard Kofi Ansah to appear before the Judicial Committee and his failure to communicate to the Judicial Committee on his absence is seen as recalcitrant and an act of defiance towards the Judicial Committee of the Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) and the Association as a whole.
“Mr Bernard Kofi Ansah having contested for the General Secretary position should have known better that the Association has a constitution, a document that spells out the functions and importance of the Judicial Committee of the Association”it stated.

The Judicial Committee therefore rules that Mr Bernard Kofi Ansah per his actions is not deemed fit to occupy any office of the association be it local, sector or national.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The JC keenly urge members of the association aggrieved over certain issues and actions to use the appropriate means in seeking amicable redress to their concerns.

ii. Members should at all times adhere accordingly to the calls of the Judicial Committee on any matter affecting or likely to affect the interest of the association and thus bring discredit to the TTAG or its name into disrepute, ridicule or contempt. Such members can probably appeal for a change in date. The Judicial Committee however, has the sole prerogative to accept or decline such plea.

iii. The JC also recommend that National Executive Officers in acting capacities should remain as such until a new National Executive Council is constituted at Congress.
